Open Shelving in a Modern Kitchen

When going through a kitchen renovation, a budget-friendly way of opening up the space is by reducing or completely eliminating the upper cabinets.  In place of these cabinets, you can mount shelving with hidden brackets at a fraction of the cost.  Of course, without the help of cabinets doors to hide any untidiness, you'll want to keep frequently used items that have a simple design on display on these upper shelves and relegate the plastic sippy cups and promotional mugs behind closed doors in the lower cabinets.

The History

In 2014, my husband and I purchased this split-level ranch home with the hope that we could revive it and bring it into the 21st century.  The house definitely showed it's age as it was a home to another family for over the past fifty years.  It took some time, but I was finally able to convince my husband that through the wood paneling and dated kitchen, the house still had the potential to be the home to our own family for the next fifty years.
